ANALYSIS MATCH:   Tottenham are the form team coming into this one with five wins out of seven in the league. They were on course for six out of seven at Blackburn two weeks ago before a poor refereeing decision reduced them to ten men and they conceded two late goals. Tottenham’s form under Harry Redknapp has improved dramatically and they are now on course for a UEFA cup spot.   Newcastle are seven games without a win and have won once in sixteen. They are running out of games and have to start winning soon if they are to have any chance of staying up. Alan Shearer will be targeting three points from this one as a draw simply isn’t good enough at this stage of the season. Newcastle actually have a very good recent record against Tottenham, winning the last six in a row. However, those victories came under different managers and with better players. This current Newcastle side has one just three of their last twenty away games and I’ll be very surprised if they make it seven in a row on Sunday.   Newcastle have drawn twelve of their thirty two games this season which is more than any other Premiership side. At 3.9 on Betfair, the draw is possibly the value call in this market. However, with the carrot of European football in front of them and a near fully fit squad, I think Spurs will probably take all three points.

GOALS:   There is a strong history of high scoring games in this fixture with the last seven in a row featuring three or more and averaging 3.6 goals per game. Newcastle have one of the highest goals per game averages in the division at 2.8 goals per game and have kept just one clean sheet in their last fifteen. It is no coincidence that Shay Given left the club in January. Tottenham on the other hand have only averaged 2.3 goals per game and White Hart Lane has seen fewer goals than any other Premiership ground this season. I think this is partially down to Tottenham struggling in front of goal earlier this season and now that everyone is fit they look to have plenty of goals in the team.   There has never been a goal less draw between these two sides in the history of the Premiership. Newcastle have also scored more goals against Spurs than any other Premiership club. I think this could be an open game with both teams going for the win and consequently, I think evens about over 2.5 goals looks a bit of value here.

GOALSCORERS:   Robbie Keane is Tottenham’s main goal threat but at 13/8 doesn’t offer particular value. Newcastle’s Michael Owen does appear to be a shade of value at 11/4 to score anytime with PaddyPower. Owen has missed a large part of the season through injury but has fantastic goals to game ratio when he does play. He has had a few games to build up match fitness now and I expect to see his name on the score sheet sooner rather than later.

RECOMMENDATIONS 1pt over 2.5 Goals evens Ladbrokes or 2.04 Betfair

picked up injuries against Man City that could keep them out for up to eight
weeks.
They join a
long injury list that includes Mark Viduka, Danny Guthrie, Cacapa, Alan Smith,
Obafemi Martins, Beye, Kadar and Gonzalez.
Shay
Given was left out of the side against Man City and is reportedly about to hand
in a transfer request.
Charles
Nzogbia has taken great offence to Joe Kinnear miss pronouncing his name and
is refusing to play for the club again.
Reports
suggest that a fee has been agreed with Bolton for Kevin Nolan and he could
be in the squad.
Nyron
Nosworthy is missing for Sunderland whilst Craig Gordon is not yet ready to
return from injury.
Keiron
Richardson should return to the starting line up however.

ANALYSIS

MATCH: Newcastle
go into this fixture with a squad decimated by injuries and unsettled by want
away players. Shay Given has reportedly handed in a written transfer request
and looks set to join Man City, which will be a huge loss. Their injury situation
was bad enough at the start of the week, but the loss of Michael Owen and Joey
Barton on Wednesday night has turned it into a full scale crisis. With Mark
Viduka, Shola Ameobi and Obafemi Martins all injured too, the goalscoring responsibilities
will fall on the shoulders of inexperienced youngster Andy Carroll. He will
be supported by Damien Duff in what will be a very weak looking attack. Charles
Nzogbia added to Joe Kinnear’s problems yesterday by taking great offence to
his manager miss pronouncing his name in an interview. Nzogbia has refused to
play for Kinnear again and is really just using the incident as an excuse to
engineer a transfer before the window closes.
Even
if you put the injury/transfer crisis to one side, Newcastle have been in awful
form lately, picking up just a single point from a possible fifteen and getting
dumped out of the FA cup by Hull. Their excellent home support usually makes
it unwise to oppose the Geordies at home, however, the St James’ Park faithful
seem to be growing disillusioned with events at the club. Incredibly, there
are still tickets available for what should be one of the biggest games of the
season. Just seven wins in their last twenty home games also suggests that St
James’ Park is no longer the fortress it once was.
Sunderland
are in decent form with just one defeat in five games. They have kept back to
back clean sheets and possess a dangerous forward partnership in Cisse and Kenwyne
Jones. Steed Malbranque is the creative influence in midfield with eight assists
so far this season and Sunderland will look to him to provide the ammunition
for the front two. The Mackems are also boosted by the return of Kieron Richardson
who scored the winner in the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light earlier
in the season.
There
has been a gamble already on Sunderland but they are still value at 2/1 in my
opinion. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Newcastle go off only marginal favourites
on Betfair and would be happy to back Sunderland at 7/4 or better.

GOALS: It
is difficult to judge how many goals there will be in this game as there is
no strong trend in any of the stats. Newcastle games tend to feature a high
number of goals with this especially being the case in home games. Sunderland
games tend to be relatively low scoring affairs however. Recent head to heads
are also evenly split between under and over 2.5 goals. If I had to go one way
or the other I’d probably back overs at evens. Newcastle’s injury problems,
and the absence of Shay Given, should see Sunderland score at least one, forcing
Newcastle to attack and leave space on the counter. An early goal could open
things up dramatically. That said, Newcastle’s depleted side don’t look to have
many goals in them.

GOALSCORERS: The
best bet here has to be Kenywne Jones at 12/5 with Skybet to score anytime.
Jones is bang in form with five goals in seven league games. He will fancy his
chances against Steve Harper and is a very fair price. Djibril Cisse is another
player with chances of getting on the score sheet and is also backable at 11/5.
Cisse is Sunderland’s top scorer with eight league goals. It’s difficult to
make a case for any Newcastle player but if I had to pick out someone I’d go
for Steven Taylor at 13/1 with PaddyPower to score anytime. He is a threat from
set pieces and most other firms are just 9/1.

RECOMMENDATIONS

2pts Sunderland to beat Newcastle 21/10 BoyleSports or 2/1 Betfred, PaddyPower and William Hill

The race for the Premiership continues this weekend as Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea look to close the gap on current leaders Liverpool. Arsenal are the first in action this weekend when they travel to the Riverside to take on Middlesbrough, while Manchester United must wait till Saturday tea time to face Spurs at White Hart Lane. Chelsea could be four points behind Liverpool by the time they welcome West Ham to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, while earlier that day Newcastle make the longest journey in the Premiership as they head to the South Coast to take on Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Middlesbrough v Arsenal, Saturday, Sky Sports 1, 12:45pm

Arsenal could temporarily take third spot form Man United if they win in the North East, although their recent inconsistency will be a worry for Arsene Wenger. Despite their morale boosting 2-1 win over Chelsea two weeks ago, they have suffered two defeats in their last three games, and narrowly beat Wigan 1-0 in the other. Burnley beat a young side 2-0 in the Carling Cup, but it was a near full strength side that under performed against Porto in the Champions League in mid week. Middlesbrough’s inconsistent form continued last week as they lost for the fourth time this season after taking the lead in the game. Tuncay Sanli’s neat finish ten minutes from time at the KC stadium looked to have sealed the points for the Teesiders, but a Ross Turnbull own goal just two minutes later set up a grandstand finish. Marlon King converted a penalty five minutes from time following David Wheater’s challenge on Geovanni to end the game in dramatic fashion, and leave Gareth Southgate wondering how his team left Humberside without any points to show for it.

Middlesbrough are 4/1 with VCbet to win for the first time in five games, while Arsenal are 18/25 with CentreBet to maintain their slim Premiership hopes.

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United, Saturday, Setanta Sports 1, 5:30pm

Tottenham welcome Man United to White Hart Lane as they look to continue their revival under Harry Redknapp. They have won nine of the twelve games under his stewardship so far, and will certainly be looking up the table now, rather than over their shoulders as they were in the final days of Juande Ramos. The most notable development under Redknapp is the re-emergence of strikers Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko, who have notched fourteen goals between them since the change of manager at the end of October. Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is still causing some nervous moments at the back, but the return of Ledley King to the back four has restored some of the lost confidence. United sealed top spot in Group E with a 2-2 draw against Aalborg, although they were far from convincing on Wednesday night at Old Trafford. Despite Carlos Tevez giving the Red Devils the lead in the third minute, they conceded two goals in 15 minutes right before half time to give the Danish champions a surprise half time lead. Wayne Rooney put United back on level terms shortly after half time, but they were unable to break down the Danes again on a frustrating night. They can move to within two points of second place Chelsea here, but will not take this game lightly as Spurs continue to build their progression up the table.

Tottenham are the 10/3 underdogs with VCbet to continue their Redknapp revival, while Manchester United are 4/5 favourites with CentreBet to close the gap to Chelsea.

Portsmouth v Newcastle United, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 1:30pm

Joe Kinnear’s side make the 345 mile trip south to Fratton Park on Sunday as they look to extend their unbeaten streak to five games. They are, however, searching for their first win in six games against Tony Adams’ side, who have certainly entertained their fans in recent weeks. The 2-2 draw with AC Milan in the UEFA Cup was the highlight of a five game streak that saw 20 goals, and Pompey will again look to striking pair Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch to lead from the front. Crouch was on target last week in the 1-1 draw at WBA, and Pompey will be looking to follow that up with a win here to take them to within a point of the UEFA cup places. Newcastle will be looking for maximum points for different reasons as just a point separates them from neighbours Sunderland in the relegation zone. They will want to make up from the disappointment of losing a two goal lead at home to Stoke last week, in a game that looked to be over at half time. Michael Owen had given them a two goal lead within 25 minutes, and before Mamady Sibide pulled one back on sixty minutes they looked to be cruising. However they could not withstand fierce pressure in the final minutes and finally succumbed to an injury time goal from Abdoulaye Faye.

Portsmouth are evens with VCbet to get back to winning ways, with Newcastle 5/2 with CentreBet to celebrate the long journey back with a win.

Chelsea v West Ham United, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 4:00pm

Chelsea successfully came through a potentially nervous night on Tuesday night as they qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League thanks to a 2-1 victory over CFR Cluj. Despite taking the lead through Salomon Kalou shortly before half time, they were never at their best, and this was demonstrated as Yussouf Kone headed an equaliser to put the Blues on the brink of elimination. However, the introduction of Didier Drogba proved vital as he scored the winner 20 minutes from time to seal the blues’ place in the next round. They will be looking to capitalise on any mistakes Liverpool may make this weekend when they welcome West Ham to Stamford Bridge, and the first return of Gianfranco Zola since his time in a Chelsea shirt. The little Italian will be aiming to get one over on his old side as the Hammers look to bounce back from last weeks 2-0 defeat to Spurs. Prior to that they had been on a three match unbeaten run, which included a win at Sunderland and holding league leaders Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield. Last weeks defeat leaves them fifth from bottom, just three points outside of the drop zone, and they will need to be at their best defensively if they hope to take anything from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are 1/4 with CentreBet to win another three points towards their Premiership challenge, while West Ham are 14/1 at VCbet to celebrate Gianfranco Zola’s return to Stamford Bridge with a win.

Weekend Horse Racing

FREE FALL …

If your selection FALLS, VCbet will refund your losing stake as a free bet on the following day’s racing!3

This weekend’s big race takes place at Cheltenham on Saturday at 2:30pm with the BoyleSports Gold Cup. Imperial Commander is the 15/8 favourite with CentreBet following his win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup back in November. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge was impressive that day, its only outing this year, as it took the lead around the halfway mark and by the second last had blown all the other challengers away. Silverburn, expected to be Imperial Commanders closest competitor this Saturday, did not jump well that day in the Gold Cup but will certainly challenge for top spot here. The combination of Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh is never far from the front in these big races, and the brother of Denman is 5/1 at VCbet to follow up his stable mates success. Three Mirrors was another horse that impressed in November, as he followed up a win at Ayr towards the end of last season with an encouraging fifth in the Gold Cup. The horse once again finished strongly at Cheltenham, and could be one to look out for in the closing stages in this slightly longer distance of 2m and 5f. Graham Lee may have instructions from trainer Ferdy Murphy to hold back in the early stages, ready for the 9/1 shot at CentreBet to charge coming towards the final few fences.

Local pride is all to play for this weekend with three local derbies in the Premiership. Newcastle visit the Riverside to face Middlesbrough on Saturday, while on Super Sunday Blue faces Red in Manchester as City play United. On Sunday afternoon Chelsea welcome Arsenal in the London derby, with a chance for the Blues to possibly kill off the Gunners title ambitions. The Hennesy Gold Cup is the big race of the weekend at Newbury, where Paul Nicholls will be looking to replicate his success from last year with the phenomenal Denman.

Weekend Football

Manchester City v Manchester United, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 1:30pm

City welcome United to the City of Manchester Stadium, with their two victories in last years Manchester derby’s fresh in their memories. City won this fixture 1-0 last season, although it will probably be the 2-1 win at Old Trafford that they will draw from in the build up to this weekend. United will be looking to avenge those defeats, the first time City had done the double over United in nearly 40 years. They have overcome their slow start and are now looking to close down Chelsea and Liverpool’s 8 point lead over them.

Manchester City are 3/1 with Pagebet bookmaker to claim a third successive win in the Manchester Derby, while Manchester United are 4/5 with CentreBet to claim top honours in the city.

If Carlos Tevez scores at anytime during Manchester City v Manchester United, BGBET will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

If Man City v Man United finishes 0-0 BGBET will refund all losing correct score bets on that game.¹

Chelsea v Arsenal, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 4:30pm

A respondent Arsenal will travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday following their midweek Champions League win. Niklas Bendtners late goal against Dynamo Kiev eased some of the pressure that had been building with recent poor results, and that had been heightened following William Gallas’ comments last week. Chelsea will still fancy their chances against the Gunners, and will look to exploit any weaknesses that have been exposed in recent events.

Chelsea are the 4/6 favourites with BGBET to pull further clear of the Gunners at the top, while Arsenal are 4/1 with VCbet to get their season back on track with a victory.

If Joe Cole scores at anytime during Chelsea v Arsenal, BGBET will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Liverpool v West Ham United, Monday, Setanta Sports 1, 8:00pm

Liverpool face West Ham in the Monday night game, hoping Arsenal would have helped them to stay at the top of the Premiership. However, if the Gunners do not beat Chelsea then Liverpool will need to win this game to reclaim their place at the top. West Ham will enter this game with some confidence following their win over Sunderland last week. That was the Hammers first win since September, although they face a difficult task at Anfield.

Liverpool are 1/3 favourites with bookmakers VCbet to continue their time at the top of the Premiership, with West Ham 9/1 at Pagebet to shock the league leaders at Anfield.

If Dirk Kuyt scores at anytime during Liverpool v West Ham United, BGBET will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Championship and SPL football, throughout the weekend, Sky Sports & Setanta Sports

There is a full set of Championship football this weekend, including the Midlands derby where Wolves entertain Birmingham. These two local rivals sit first and second in the Championship respectively, and Birmingham will be looking to cut Wolve’s six point lead over them at Molineux this weekend. The two Welsh sides in the Championship meet on Sunday when rivals Cardiff travel to Swansea, with both in the hunt for a playoff place. Two other sides just outside of the playoff places meet on Saturday when Bristol City travel to Deepdale to meet Preston, while Monday night’s game sees Reading attempt to strengthen their playoff position against struggling Coventry. In the SPL Rangers meet Hearts as they look to close the 4 point gap to rivals Celtic when they meet third place Hearts on Saturday.

Weekend Horse Racing

This weekends racing takes us to Newbury where the Hennessy Gold Cup Chase at 2.40pm on Saturday is the headline race.

Denman romped home at 5/1 to take this race last year, and his winning trainer Paul Nicholls is back again with three runners this year. The National Hunt season starts in earnest this weekend as Cheltenham hosts the Open Meeting, with the highlight coming on Saturday afternoon in the form of the Gold Cup Chase. The two early Premiership leaders will be looking to gain an advantage in one of the most competitive Premiership races in years this weekend. Liverpool are in action first when they travel to Bolton on Saturday lunch time, while Chelsea must wait until later that day to face bottom side West Bromwich Albion. On Sunday Everton host Middlesbrough as seventh meets eighth, while Hull look to continue their bright start when they host Manchester City.

Weekend Horse Racing

Cheltenham hosts the first jumps festival of the new season this weekend, with the three day Open Meeting. The highlight is the Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase at 2:35pm on Saturday, where Silverburn is the 10/3 favourite at VCbet, with Imperial Commander, a 6/1 shot with Pagebet, and Barbers Shop at 8/1 with BGBET following closely behind in the betting.

Last years winning trainer Ferdy Murphy is looking to defend the crown he won with 13/2 chance L’Antartique, and his challenger this year is Three Mirrors. However another success would be even more impressive this time round as Three Mirrors is currently a 40/1 outsider with both Pagebet and BGBET.

Weekend Football

Bolton v Liverpool, Saturday, Sky Sports 1, 12:45pm

Liverpool are the first of the leaders to play this weekend, and they will want to leave the Reebok with a three point lead over Chelsea after their game against Bolton. After their stutter against Tottenham the Reds looked to be back on form last week against West Brom as they ran out 3-0 winners. Robbie Keane scored his first Premier League goals for Liverpool at Anfield as his brace sealed the game before half time. Bolton have had a mini revival of late which has seen them climb from the relegation to mid table. They beat upstarts Hull 1-0 last time out, and that came on the back of a 2-0 win over Man City at the Reebok.

Bolton are 5/1 with BGBET to continue their good form, while Liverpool are 3/5 with Pagebet to build their lead at the top of the Premiership.

If Ryan Babel scores at anytime during Bolton v Liverpool, BGBET will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.4

West Bromwich Albion v Chelsea, Saturday, Setanta Sports 1, 5:30pm

Chelsea travel to the Hawthorns on Saturday evening for a possible top v bottom clash. Going into the weekend they were top thanks to their goal difference, which is down to new coach Phil Scolari’s attacking mentality. They have scored 16 goals in their last 5 Premiership games, and the West Brom defence will have to hold strong to withstand the formidable Chelsea attack. The Baggies will certainly have to put on a better performance than they have done so far against other sides from the “Big Four”, as Liverpool beat them 3-0 last week, while Manchester United put four past them in October.

West Brom are a massive 7/1 outsider with CentreBet to cause a huge upset, while Chelsea are 2/7 with BGBET to move back to the top of the Premiership.

If Florent Malouda scores at anytime during West Brom v Chelsea, BGBET will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.4

Everton v Middlesbrough, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 1:30pm

Two sides who have had promising starts to the campaign meet on Sunday when Middlesbrough travel to Goodison to face Everton. Everton will be full of confidence as they have won their last three Premiership games, although in each of these games they have only scored in the last ten minutes. This knack of scoring late goals was demonstrated in its most startling effect at West Ham last week, when they scored three times in the last ten minutes to come form a goal behind to win 3-1. Boro have also left it late in scoring in their last two games, as Tuncay’s 88th minute winner at Villa Park last week followed Mido’s 83rd minute goal at West Ham the week before that gave the Teesider’s a 1-1 draw.
Everton are 4/5 with Pagebet to stretch their unbeaten run to five games, with Boro 7/2 at CentreBet to continue their recent good run of form.

If Marouane Fellaini scores at anytime during Everton v Middlesbrough, BGBET will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.4

If Everton v Middlesbrough finishes 0-0 BGBET will refund all losing correct score bets on that game.4

Hull v Manchester City, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 4:00pm

Despite their excellent start Hull will be looking to win for the first time in four Premiership games when they welcome Manchester City to the KC Stadium on Sunday. Last week’s 1-0 defeat to Bolton showed how far the Tiger’s have come this season, as many people were shocked that the Premiership new boys were beat by an established Premiership side. Prior to that game they had been brought back down to earth with successive defeats against Man Utd. and Chelsea, although they did push the Champions close at Old Trafford. Manchester City will also be looking for their first league win in four, although their pre-season expectations would have been considerably higher than Hulls. However, the addition of Robinho and Wright-Phillips has not transformed the side in the way many believed, and they will want to leave Humberside on Sunday night with some points as they prepare for a spending spree in January.
Hull are 19/10 with VCbet to continue their excellent start to the season, while BGBET make Manchester City 13/10 at the KC Stadium.

If Shaun Wright Phillips scores at anytime during Hull v Manchester City, BGBET will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.4

Place a correct score bet on any of the above matches this week, and if it gets beat by an injury time goal BGBET will refund all losing correct score stakes on that match.¹
